Description

Born in NYC’s Little Italy, D’Angelico is widely regarded as one of the finest archtop guitar manufacturers of the 20th century. Nowadays, they make guitars of all shapes and sizes; all built with the same exceptional detail, mastery and flair that put them on the map.

The Excel 59 revisits a D'Angelico mid-century classic. This deep full hollow body electric produces classically crisp articulation, but also provides you with an updated modern feel. It's the best of both guitar building time periods!

Construction

The hollow body is made of a flamed maple and spruce combo, offering plenty of bright spark melding with the expansive sound. 5-ply binding rounds it off with a touch of class. The multi-piece neck employs a strip of walnut sandwiched between solid maple, topped with a very flat 16 inch radius rosewood fretboard – ideal for defined notes and fast manoeuvres.

The hardware is where some of this instrument’s true character shines through. Luxuriously adorned with gold locking strap buttons, Grover Imperial tuners and staircase talipiece, the 59 is an undeniably striking instrument. Expect fantastic tuning stability, squeaky-clean intonation and reliability across the board.

Sound

D'Angelico's made-in-house Great Dane P90 pickups are a breath of fresh air, snapping and snarling with each note picked. They'll add character and harmonics in the bucketloads to your dry clean tones and light gain. All volume and tone adjustments are smooth as ever thanks to the 500k pots.

Electric Guitars

Electric guitars use magnetic pickups to convert string vibration into an electrical signal, allowing the sound to be shaped through amplifiers and effects. Key things to understand include body shape, pickup type, neck profile, scale length and bridge design, as these all affect tone, feel and sustain. They are used across almost every modern genre, from clean and expressive to high-gain and aggressive styles, making them one of the most versatile instruments available.

Hollow Body Electric Guitars

Hollow body electric guitars feature a fully hollow construction that gives them a warm, resonant, and open tone. The air inside the body enhances natural acoustic character, making these guitars especially popular for jazz, blues, and vintage-inspired styles. They respond beautifully to touch and dynamics, offering rich chord detail and smooth lead tones, though they are generally best suited to lower to moderate volume levels. Hollow body electric guitars are ideal for players who value warmth, expressiveness, and a more organic feel in their amplified sound.

Hollow Body

Hollow body guitars have fully hollowed bodies with no solid centre block, giving them a light feel and a naturally resonant acoustic character. This construction allows the body to vibrate more freely, producing an open, airy sound with strong warmth and depth.

They are closely associated with jazz, blues, and early rock and roll, where clean tones, dynamics, and natural resonance are valued. Hollow body guitars offer rich, rounded lows and smooth highs, but are more prone to feedback at high volumes, making them best suited to lower-gain and clean playing styles.
