The Ibanez Bass Workshop is where they bass designers get to play and come with some guitars that may not be for everyone but they do something new or different. This SRF705 is part of this incredible range of basses. Dubbed the SR Portamento this bass takes the powerful Soundgear (SR) design and gives it a high access fretless board for incredible range and that classic, woody fretless tone.

Upper Fret Access

While a lot of fretless bass guitars just take a regular design and strip out the frets Ibanez have thought about what they could achieve by giving you an extra few points of access. So the deep lower horn cutaway and through neck design came together to give you access to what is the equivalent of 30 frets. This extra range is amazing for solos where you may have previously found you just ran out of fretboard.

Hybrid Electronics.

Electric bass pickups work great with electric guitars, they have done for many years providing us with some of the world’s most iconic jazz tones. But what if you could blend that with a high quality acoustic style piezo system- Well then you get a really natural and open tone that can easily be moulded with the pwoerful active EQ on the pair of Bartolini magnetic pickups.

Here’s what Ibanez say about the SRF705 Fretless Bass

30 Fret Neck
The SR Portamento features an extended 30-fret Rosewood fretboard for playing in upper registers usually only accessible on an upright.

5pc SR Maple/Bubinga Through-Neck
The SR Portamento features 5-piece Maple/ Bubinga through-neck for increased sustain and superior tone.

Piezo Level Control
On the back of the SR Portamento are recessed controls assigned to each individual string to control the volume of the Ibanez-exclusive AeroSilk Piezo pickup. Perfect string balance and response can be achieved by adjusting the volume to accommodate different string gauges.

Custom bridge for AeroSilk Piezo System
The Custom bridge is created specifically for the optimum performance of the AeroSilk Piezo pickup system. Unique plastic saddles were designed to work in concert with the piezo pickups and enhance the acoustic “”stand-up”” quality of the sound.

Bartolini MK-1 Pickups
The MK-1 pickups are a split coil design that provides a very wide frequency range and enhanced definition for maximum accuracy. The Neck and bridge pickups have equal response, like traditional single coils, but without the hum and noise.

AeroSilk Piezo system w/Active tone control
The EQ section incorporates the controls of the Bartolini pickups with the AeroSilk Piezo system. Controls include a Master volume, balance and bass & treble controls for the Bartolini MK-1 pickups and a Master volume and a tone control for the Piezo system.

About Ibanez

The Hoshino Gakki company began in 1908 as the musical instrument sales division of the Hoshino Shoten, a bookstore chain. Hoshino Gakki decided in 1935 to make Spanish-style acoustic guitars, at first using the “Ibanez Salvador” brand name in honor of Spanish luthier Salvador Ibáñez, and later simply “Ibanez”.

In the 1970s, the Nisshin Onpa company who owned the Maxon brand name, developed and began selling a series of effect pedals in Japan. Hoshino Gakki licensed these for sale using the name Ibanez outside Japan. These two companies eventually began doing less and less business together until Nisshin Onpa ceased manufacturing the TS-9 reissue for Hoshino Gakki in 2002.
