Tone City has established a strong reputation in the pedal market in their relatively short history. Renowned for producing incredible-sounding pedals at affordable prices, their Model M is a classic rock distortion stompbox that emulates some of the world's most popular black and gold amplifiers.

Featuring two distortion modes and a separate boost circuit, this 2-in-1 pedal is amazingly versatile.

Crunch or High Gain?

The classic British amplifiers that the Model M is based upon covered generations of different tones. That's why Tone City has tried to emulate their notoriously saturated crunch and high-gain tones in one unit, with the mode switch allowing you to swap between these distinctive sounds.

In crunch mode, you'll attain nostalgic 60s and 70s rock tones, providing anything from a light overdrive to a raunchy crunch via the dedicated crunch control. In high gain mode, a more modern JCM-style tone is delivered, with a powerful mid-range and hair-raising levels of gain. This will take you from alternative rock to heavy metal at just the turn of a knob.

But if you want even more tonal potency, engage the boost circuit to tighten up your sound and achieve more volume for solos! (Please note: Boost function only works when distortion is engaged, it does not work on its own).

Simple Controls

When you hear about a pedal with two different gain modes as well as a boost function, you'd assume that it would have a dozen complex controls. But Tone City has ensured that the Model M is easy to use, relying on just a select few essential controls.

With its independent gain controls for each distortion mode, the single tone control acts as a master EQ for both, letting you introduce more presence if you're plugged into a dark-sounding amp.

Distortion

Distortion is a guitar effect that alters the signal’s waveform, creating a gritty, aggressive sound characterized by a high level of harmonic content and sustain. It’s achieved by amplifying the input signal to the point where the amplifier or pedal’s circuitry begins to clip, causing the waveform to become squared off and jagged. This clipping produces harmonics that weren’t present in the original signal, resulting in the characteristic “gritty” or “dirty” tone associated with distortion. Distortion pedals typically feature controls for adjusting the amount of gain or distortion applied, as well as tone-shaping knobs to tailor the sound’s frequency response. Distortion is widely used in rock, metal, and punk music to add power, aggression, and sustain to guitar solos, riffs, and rhythm parts, creating a bold and intense sonic impact in the mix. Popular distortion pedals include the Boss DS-1, Pro Co Rat, and Electro-Harmonix Big Muff Pi.
