Description

The legendary sixties classic is back and better than ever in the Epiphone line-up. The Inspired by Gibson collection borrows the best bits from iconic instruments and adds contemporary construction, hardware and electronics to the mix.

Construction

The SG Special is made of a renowned mahogany body and neck combo, and is dressed in a retro finish – some things you just won’t want to change. Its ‘60s SlimTaper neck is an excellent addition, making the SG brilliantly fast and comfortable to play.

Paired with a 12” fingerboard radius and medium jumbo frets, the SG provides an authentic, lively playing experience. Hardware specs include a Graph Tech nut and a LockTone ABR bridge for solid tuning stability.

Sound

Before Gibson standardised the humbucker across their range, the SG was equipped with P90 pickups. These are single coil pickups providing a high output, powerful tone that doesn’t require much heat to get aggressive. Otherwise known as the soapbar, P90s excel in anything from jazz, through blues and into rock. The P-90 PRO pickups in the Special are fully waxed potted to eliminate unwanted mic feedback.

Electric Guitars

Electric guitars use magnetic pickups to convert string vibration into an electrical signal, allowing the sound to be shaped through amplifiers and effects. Key things to understand include body shape, pickup type, neck profile, scale length and bridge design, as these all affect tone, feel and sustain. They are used across almost every modern genre, from clean and expressive to high-gain and aggressive styles, making them one of the most versatile instruments available.

P90

P90 pickups are a type of single-coil pickup known for their thick, punchy sound that sits between traditional single-coils and humbuckers. They deliver strong midrange presence with more output and grit than a typical single-coil, while retaining clarity and touch sensitivity.

Tonally, P90s are raw, dynamic, and expressive, offering bright highs, muscular mids, and a slightly gritty edge when pushed. They are widely used in blues, rock, punk, and indie styles, and are valued for their ability to sound articulate when clean and aggressive when driven.

SG

The Gibson SG (Solid Guitar) is a rock icon with attitude. Introduced in the early 1960s, it took the Les Paul’s power and gave it a sharper, lighter, double-cut design for faster access to higher frets. Its twin humbuckers deliver raw, biting tone and endless sustain — perfect for everything from blues to heavy rock. Played by legends like Angus Young and Tony Iommi, the SG proves that simplicity, style, and sheer power never go out of fashion.
