Description

The DiMarzio DP100 is the original after market hot humbucker. Before the Super Distortion came out in the seventies you were normally stuck with what came in your guitar or what you could salvage from other guitars. This was one of the first ways to beef up your sound quickly and easily without needing to cannibalize another guitar.

The Sound

The DiMarzio Super Distortion like the name suggests is a hot and heavy humbucker that can be calmed down by the volume control on your guitar. You have probably heard this pickup thousands of times without ever realising it as it became an industry standard and the pickup to have in your guitar.

Tuned with a massive low end and midrange this sound not only makes the stage rumble but also makes your sound pop from the stage and really cut through the mix. This EQ curve makes this pickup perfect for use in the bridge position for both rhythm and lead work when you like to chuck on a few layers of gain.

Here’s what DiMarzio say about the DP100

Recommended For
The Super Distortion® is primarily a bridge position pickup, although it can be used in the neck position with a relatively low-gain amp. Specifically designed for solid-bodies: hollow and semi-hollow guitars can be hard to control with warm, high output pickups.

Tech Talk
When we first built the Super Distortion®, it was a 1-conductor pickup. As a 4-conductor pickup, it’s extremely versatile. Coil-splitting produces a very Strat®-like option, both in tone and power. Parallel wiring is similar to splitting, but it’s still humbucking and a little more hollow-sounding; Paul Gilbert used to use two Super Distortion® pickups wired in parallel when he was in Racer X.

Distortion Pedals

Guitar Pedals

Guitar pedals are compact effects units that shape and enhance a guitar’s sound, sitting between the instrument and the amplifier. They include gain pedals like overdrive and distortion, modulation effects such as chorus and tremolo, time-based effects like delay and reverb, and essential utilities including tuners, compressors and loopers. Understanding basic things such as pedal type, signal order, power requirements and intended use helps players choose pedals that suit their style, setup and playing environment.

Distortion

Distortion pedals deliver the raw, aggressive edge that defines rock and metal, transforming your clean tone into something powerful and full of attitude. By pushing your signal into rich harmonic saturation, they create thick, sustaining sounds that cut through any mix. From classic crunchy riffs to high-gain modern mayhem, distortion pedals give you total control over how wild or tight your tone gets. Whether you’re crafting searing leads or heavy rhythm walls, they’re an essential tool for adding energy, bite, and character to your playing.
