Back in 1955, when Gibson first unveiled the Les Paul Special, the idea was simple: take the stripped‑back charm of the Les Paul Junior and give it a touch more class. Two pickups instead of one, a mother‑of‑pearl headstock logo, plus a bound fingerboard all helped create the perfect middle ground between the refined Les Paul Standard and the student‑friendly Junior.
By 1958, the design evolved into the now‑iconic double‑cutaway shape, opening up effortless access all the way to the top frets. Then in 1960, everything really clicked into place.
