While available in limited quantities over the last couple of years, this new Core edition of the Special Semi-Hollow guitar is here to stay – sporting signature PRS features that include a 25″ scale for optimal string tension, a comfortable “Pattern” neck carve, beautiful bird fingerboard inlays and proprietary third-generation hardware.
Stunning Semi-Hollow Body
As its name suggests, this incredible PRS model’s most noteworthy element its its luxurious semi-hollow body. Producing a vibrant and highly-resonant sound even when unplugged, the Special Semi-Hollow truly blossoms when played through an amplifier — both airy and rich in sustain.
First-Class Materials
PRS prides itself on using only the highest quality woods for its Maryland-made models. The Special Semi-Hollow’s Mahogany back ensures that a rich tonal flavour underpins the overall voice on the instrument, giving the Special Semi-Hollow some essential low-end warmth for jazz or blues tones.
Adorned with a beautiful Flamed Maple top, this material also serves an important sonic purpose by adding bright top-end complexities into the mix for articulate, crisp note definition — making soulful lead lines or exotic chords sing with sparkling chime.
Mahogany “Pattern” Neck
Maintaining PRS’ tried-and-tested tonewood combinations, the Special Semi-Hollow’s body is paired with a Mahogany neck shaped to the brand’s “Pattern” neck carve. Substantial in the fretting hand, this particular profile provides a familiar feel for traditionalists and offers great support at all areas of the neck.
Topped with a sleek 22-fret Rosewood fingerboard for a velvety touch under the fingers, PRS’ distinctive bird inlays contribute an extra layer of elegance to an already spectacular-looking guitar.
Flexible Pickup Selection
In terms of versatility, an H/S/H pickup configuration is difficult to beat. That’s why the Special Semi-Hollow is arguably one of PRS’ most sonically diverse instruments, featuring a pair of 58/15 LT humbuckers and a desirable Narrowfield pickup in the middle position.
The 58/15s are acclaimed for delivering that classic medium-output PAF-style sound, but with improved consistency and better balance across the frequency spectrum. The Narrowfield pickup emits the bite and clarity of a single-coil pickup but with added punch, which works brilliantly in conjunction with the two humbuckers.
Plenty of Tone-Shaping Potential
Paired with a 5-way blade switch and two mini-toggles that tap the 58/15 LT humbuckers, this guitar can handle myriad sounds and styles (with twelve pickup combinations in total). Roll back the tone control for added growl, turn it up for some shimmer, and have fun exploring this wide tonal palette!
High-Quality Hardware
Poor hardware can let down even the best of guitars, but the Special Semi-Hollow is fitted with some of the most finely-machined appointments available. PRS’ Phase III Locking Tuners make string changes fast and simple, with their locking design also improving tuning stability as less winds are required around their machine head posts.
At the other end of the instrument you’ll find the Gen III Tremolo, indicative of the class-leading quality you’d expect from a PRS model. With a wonderfully-smooth vibrato action, this tremolo’s high-mass design also ensures maximum string vibration transference through the guitar’s body — giving you unparalleled levels of sustain.
