A channel is an independent signal path within an amplifier, mixer, or processor, each with its own controls and voicing. Multiple channels allow different sounds or gain levels to be accessed from the same unit without changing external equipment.

In guitar amplifiers, channels are commonly used to switch between clean, crunch, and high-gain tones. Channels can often be selected via a footswitch, making them especially useful in live situations where quick changes in sound are needed.
