The Hot Rod Deville 212 is one of the most popular amplifiers in the world thanks to its great quality sound and affordable price. This Mike Landau signature version of this iconic amp strips away anything they deemed unnecessary like an overdrive channel to make an amplifier that works with your pedals perfectly.
The Thought Process
The idea behind this amplifier is that it gives you a canvas to work with. Fender have been calling this amp tonally pure with the idea that this is as close as you are going to get to a tonally flat amplifier without losing that Fender feel. The amp still sounds great as a clean amplifier no question about that but when you introduce a few of your favourite pedals you will hear this amplifier come to life.
The Function
So as we said the overdrive channel has gone and is instead replaced with a second clean channel with an optional volume boost. The best way to think about this is not a 2 channel 3 mode amp but a single channel 3 volume amp. As you bump up the volume you will get some lovely natural overdrive from the tubes especially with boost channel but it is still essentially a clean channel.
The other big tonal change you will notice with this amplifier over the original Deville 212 is that this is loaded up with a set of Celestion V-Type speakers that are based somewhat on the 68 customs. These speakers have a bit of a British flavour and really compliment this simpler tone circuit really well. What is even more important is that it can handle any type of drive pedal you may want to chuck in front of it as well.
The Build
Internally this amplifier is very similar to the original deville 212 so for fans of the original amplifier you will still get that amazing clean sound. Fitted with a pair of 6L6 power amp valves and three 12AX7 valves this still features the amazing American clean sound that the Hot Rod series is known for but now with a bigger focus on compatibility with a wide range of pedals.
Here’s what Fender have to say about the Deville ML
The Hot Rod DeVille ML amplifier delivers beautiful tube tone with features inspired by instrumental solo artist, world-class sideman, session master and “players’ player” Michael Landau. An influential guitarist known for creating rich, expressive tones, Landau has used Hot Rod DeVille amps on stage for many years, with a special two-amp setup fed by a variety of stomp boxes. Designed in conjunction with Michael Landau, the new ML model is based on the Fender Hot Rod DeVille III, with tube circuitry and 60-watt output, two 12″ speakers, spring reverb and an effects loop. The ML version ups the ante by incorporating several cool features that guitar players are sure to appreciate, such as volume switching and boost capabilities.
