Founded in 2015 and hailing from Boston, Massachusetts, Electronic Audio Experiments are more than just a pedal manufacturer, they are "an exploration in sound and texture via electronics". The Electronic Audio Experiments Surveyor is a compact re-interpretation of the Instrument Voicing Preamp (aka IVP), a cult classic and long discontinued rackmount preamp.

Featuring a unique, transformer based “Tube Voice” distortion generator, the Surveyor is highly responsive to the frequency content of the input signal. A two-band Baxandall EQ is placed before the distortion which is actually the complete opposite to how most drive pedals work. It may seem unorthodox, but by using this method, the gain can be selectively applied to a specific frequency band. This is incredibly useful is you want to boost the treble for that signature clangy sound or boost the bass for a fuzz overload!

Controls

  • Level – Overall volume, with more than enough range for line level output or to overdrive a tube amplifier
  • Gain – Amount of overdrive/saturation equally applied to all frequencies; highly interactive with the Bass and Treble settings
  • Bass – Pre-gain low shelf boost/cut, +/-12dB @ 100Hz
  • Treble – Pre-gain high shelf boost/cut, +/-12dB @ 3KHz
  • Hi/Lo (switch) – Sets the range of the gain control. In the Lo setting the gain range is -15dB to +12dB, in the Hi setting the gain range is +9dB to +36dB.

Specifications:

  • Bypass: Relay switching with true bypass
  • Input impedance @ 1 Khz: 500kΩ
  • Output impedance @ 1 Khz: 2kΩ
  • Power: 9V DC, 2.1 mm center negative barrel. The current draw is 75 mA.
  • We recommend a regulated, isolated power supply rated for 100 mA minimum. The PSU input is protected against reverse polarity and over-voltage up to 24V. Our pedals do not accept batteries.

Stuff About Guitar Pedals

Guitar pedals are compact effects units that shape and enhance a guitar’s sound, sitting between the instrument and the amplifier. They include gain pedals like overdrive and distortion, modulation effects such as chorus and tremolo, time-based effects like delay and reverb, and essential utilities including tuners, compressors and loopers. Understanding basic things such as pedal type, signal order, power requirements and intended use helps players choose pedals that suit their style, setup and playing environment.

Stuff About Preamp Pedals

Preamp pedals are designed to shape and boost a guitar’s core tone, often acting as the front end of an amplifier or as a complete amp-style sound on a pedalboard. They can add clean gain, warmth, EQ control, or amp-like drive, and are commonly used to improve signal strength, push an amp harder, or run directly into a power amp or recording interface. Understanding output level, EQ controls and how they interact with other pedals helps players use preamp pedals effectively in both live and studio setups.

The Important stuff

Pedal — Pedals are the tools that let you shape, colour and transform your sound, from subtle tone enhancement to bold, creative effects. Whether you are adding grit, space, movement or control, a pedal becomes part of your playing rather than just an add-on. Exploring different pedals is about discovering what responds to your touch and helps your sound feel more like your own.. preamp — A preamp is a stage in the signal chain that boosts the guitar’s signal and shapes its core tone before it reaches the power amp or recording interface. Preamp pedals and units can add gain, EQ, and character, helping define clarity, warmth, and drive while forming the foundation of a player’s overall sound..
