The Catalinbread Manx Loaghtan reissue brings a classic Muff pedigree back into service with modern enhancements that make it far more flexible than its vintage counterparts. Built around the celebrated Big Muff topology, the Manx Loaghtan refines the traditional circuit with a much more powerful EQ stage and careful component tweaks, delivering everything from syrupy, sustaining leads to tight, chunky rhythm tones. It is a thoughtful reimagining rather than a slavish clone, aimed at players who want the Muff voice but with control and musicality for contemporary rigs.

Tone and Circuit

Designed around the Muff idiom but improved where it matters, the Baxandall EQ and carefully voiced gain stages deliver a wide palette of textures. The Manx Loaghtan preserves the harmonic richness of the original while allowing precise shaping of lows, highs and perceived mids.

Playable Controls

The control layout is straightforward and highly practical. SUSTAIN behaves as a fuzz control but with a treble-retaining stage to avoid the dullness common in older circuits when gain is reduced. HIGHS and LOWS are set for musical ranges so each position is usable, encouraging exploration without frustration.

Power and Reliability

The pedal accepts a centre-negative DC supply between 9V and 18V; Catalinbread recommend 9V for the intended character. Using the wrong polarity or an unsuitable supply can damage the unit and void the warranty, so use the correct adapter first time to avoid issues.

Key Features

  • Baxandall-style EQ – A much more robust treble and bass shelving section than traditional Muffs, giving precise tonal control from bright and cutting to warm and full-bodied.
  • Musical SUSTAIN control – Acts as a fuzz/gain control with a treble-retaining subcircuit so you keep clarity and presence even at lower gain settings.
  • Versatile tonal palette – Tuned gain stages deliver chunky chords, long sustaining leads and even low-gain overdrive tones, making the pedal suitable for studio and stage use.
  • Flexible power options – Operates from 9V to 18V centre-negative DC (9V recommended) so you can tailor headroom and response while remaining compatible with standard pedalboard supplies.

Stuff About Guitar Pedals

Guitar pedals are compact effects units that shape and enhance a guitar’s sound, sitting between the instrument and the amplifier. They include gain pedals like overdrive and distortion, modulation effects such as chorus and tremolo, time-based effects like delay and reverb, and essential utilities including tuners, compressors and loopers. Understanding basic things such as pedal type, signal order, power requirements and intended use helps players choose pedals that suit their style, setup and playing environment.

The Important stuff

Fuzz — Fuzz is one of the earliest and most distinctive guitar effects, known for its thick, gritty, and saturated tone that completely transforms your sound. It works by heavily clipping the audio signal, producing a raw, almost broken distortion that defined the sound of the ’60s and ’70s rock era. Classic pedals like the Fuzz Face and Big Muff became legendary for their roaring sustain and rich harmonic texture. Modern fuzz pedals range from vintage-style warmth to wild, synth-like chaos, making them perfect for players who want to add character, attitude, and a touch of chaos to their tone.. Pedal — Pedals are the tools that let you shape, colour and transform your sound, from subtle tone enhancement to bold, creative effects. Whether you are adding grit, space, movement or control, a pedal becomes part of your playing rather than just an add-on. Exploring different pedals is about discovering what responds to your touch and helps your sound feel more like your own.. Reissue.
