When they got the idea for this pedal Catalinbread were trying to create a powerful bass overdrive based on the Ampeg flip-top style amplifier. THough during production of the SFT they realized that it works great for bass and guitar tones especially when you drop tune your favourite 6 string.

Simple Controls Incredible Range

The Catalinbread SFT has a simple 4 knob control layout that is easy to learn and under the hood has a lot of small nuances that let you get a wide range of sounds. All four of the controls do as you would expect being labeled Gain, Volume, Treble and Bass so you can instantly pick it up and get playing.

The Tones

The Ampeg flip-top style amplifiers were well known for being able to deliver some incredible high gain sounds for rock bassists, but over the years guitarists have used them as well for low tuned high gain sounds when they want to keep all the low end in their tone. Although it is known for being able to fill even the biggest mixes with high gain wonder turning down the gain produces a really nice subtle overdrive that many will love.

2016 Version Updates

There has been a small change to the SFT for 2016 that actually adds quite a lot of new tones. The Stones/Stoner switch was designed to take you between two different distortion levels. Think one side is the Rolling Stones and the other is Stone Temple Pilots. Soft vintage clipping to more modern aggressive tones that push through the mix a lot harder.

Here’s what Catalinbread say about the STF Overdrive

When we originally set out on our quest to make the best Bass overdrive ever, we never imagined that it could also sound so amazing with guitar – but then we got to thinking about some of the classic late ’60s/early ’70s ‘Ya-Yas’ era tones and thought we should take a stab at them. And heck while we’re at it, it would be really cool if it worked for the more modern drop tuned heavy stuff too. Made sense since those tones were due in large part to guitars being played through amps designed for bass, right?

Stuff About Guitar Pedals

Guitar pedals are compact effects units that shape and enhance a guitar’s sound, sitting between the instrument and the amplifier. They include gain pedals like overdrive and distortion, modulation effects such as chorus and tremolo, time-based effects like delay and reverb, and essential utilities including tuners, compressors and loopers. Understanding basic things such as pedal type, signal order, power requirements and intended use helps players choose pedals that suit their style, setup and playing environment.

The Important stuff

Bass — Bass gear is all about laying the foundation of the music, providing depth, groove and connection between rhythm and harmony. From bass guitars and amplifiers to pedals and accessories designed specifically for low frequencies, everything here is built to deliver clarity, punch and control. Whether you are holding down a steady rhythm or shaping a more melodic bass voice, the right bass equipment helps you stay locked in and felt as much as heard.. Drive — Drive is an effect category that adds gain to the guitar signal, creating anything from light breakup to heavy distortion. Drive pedals are used to add warmth, sustain, and character, shaping how a guitar responds to picking dynamics and helping it cut through a mix.. Pedal — Pedals are the tools that let you shape, colour and transform your sound, from subtle tone enhancement to bold, creative effects. Whether you are adding grit, space, movement or control, a pedal becomes part of your playing rather than just an add-on. Exploring different pedals is about discovering what responds to your touch and helps your sound feel more like your own..
