The Catalinbread Soft Focus has developed its own cult following in Ambient, Shoegaze and Post-Rock circles as one of the go-to ambient reverb-style pedals. It took one of the most regarded and legendary patches from a vintage Yamaha multi-effects unit widely used within Shoegaze type genres and refined it into basically a Shoegaze on and off pedal. The Catalinbread Soft Focus Deluxe takes things further with even more control, added distortion and now 6 program modes to switch between.

  • Program 1 – Program 1 is the standard Soft Focus patch that can be found on the original pedal.
  • Program 2 – Not a million miles away from the original patch, program 2 offers extended decay time and trails for near-infinite amounts of ambience.
  • Program 3 – Program 3 adds deeper modulation for even more warble and pitch-bending capabilities.
  • Program 4 – This program offers more of a ‘shimmer’ reverb-type setting, while still maintaining the vibe and mojo of the original Soft Focus.
  • Program 5 – Like program 4 but with even deeper shimmer sounds as well as pitch-shifting delays.
  • Program 6 – The original program 1 Soft Focus sound but with the addition of input volume control for unbelievable swells via an expression pedal or by using the ‘time’ control on the pedal.

In addition, the Catalinbread Soft Focus Deluxe also features a foot-switchable high-gain op-amp distortion with fixed gain and level that can be blended in via the distortion level control. Further tone shaping can be achieved with the series/parallel switch. In series, the distortion happens before the Soft Focus effect, similar to how a traditional pedal chain would be laid out and in parallel, the distortion circuit replaces the dry signal path within the Soft Focus and the mix control now blends between the distortion sound and the Soft Focus sound.

Here’s what Catalinbread say about the Catalinbread Soft Focus Deluxe Shoegaze Reverb Delay Pedal:

Our Soft Focus wrote a new volume of all-in-one shoegaze tone, but we’ve gone above and beyond to bring you the final word in shoegaze, the Soft Focus Deluxe. The Deluxe model installs the missing delay function from the original FX500 patch, giving you exacting control over every parameter across six different programs. Dip your toes into a vast array of shoegaze textures and soundscapes with an integrated footswitchable distortion circuit, giving you the option to run it in series with or in parallel with the Soft Focus patch. We’ve also upped the stakes with a multi-function jack capable of expression control or tap tempo. Your shoes will never look the same again.

Stuff About Guitar Pedals

Guitar pedals are compact effects units that shape and enhance a guitar’s sound, sitting between the instrument and the amplifier. They include gain pedals like overdrive and distortion, modulation effects such as chorus and tremolo, time-based effects like delay and reverb, and essential utilities including tuners, compressors and loopers. Understanding basic things such as pedal type, signal order, power requirements and intended use helps players choose pedals that suit their style, setup and playing environment.

The Important stuff

Delay — Delay is an effect that records the guitar signal and plays it back after a short period of time, creating an echo or repeat. By adjusting the time, feedback, and level, delay can add subtle depth and space or produce rhythmic, expressive repeats that enhance lead lines, ambient textures, and overall atmosphere.. Deluxe. Pedal — Pedals are the tools that let you shape, colour and transform your sound, from subtle tone enhancement to bold, creative effects. Whether you are adding grit, space, movement or control, a pedal becomes part of your playing rather than just an add-on. Exploring different pedals is about discovering what responds to your touch and helps your sound feel more like your own.. Reverb — Reverb (short for reverberation) is an audio effect that simulates the natural reflections of sound in a physical space. When you play in a room, hall, or cathedral, the sound waves bounce off the walls, ceiling, and floor, creating a sense of depth and ambience. Reverb pedals and processors recreate this effect electronically, allowing guitarists and producers to shape how “big” or “live” their sound feels. From short, springy echoes that mimic vintage amp tanks to lush, atmospheric washes used in ambient or shoegaze music, reverb adds dimension and realism — turning a dry, flat tone into something immersive and expressive..
