The Gibson Custom Shop 1963 Dove Acoustic Guitar in Light Aged Natural is a stunning tribute to one of the most iconic acoustic guitars in music history. Originally introduced in 1962, the Dove has become instantly recognisable and beloved by musicians worldwide, from Tom Petty to Elvis Presley. This faithful recreation captures the essence of the early 1960s model, expertly aged by the artisans at the Murphy Lab to evoke the look, feel, and tonal character of a well-loved vintage instrument.

Featuring a thermally aged Sitka spruce top with traditional scalloped X-bracing, the 1963 Dove delivers the rich, resonant tone of a seasoned vintage guitar. The beautifully flamed maple back and sides finished in Cherry add visual elegance and contribute to the guitar’s bright, full-bodied sound. A mahogany neck with a comfortable round profile and an Indian rosewood fretboard adorned with mother-of-pearl parallelogram inlays completes the classic vintage aesthetic. With a longer 25.5” scale length, the Dove offers a distinctive voice that is louder and brighter than its sister model, the Hummingbird, making it perfect for players seeking clarity and presence.

The attention to detail extends to the hardware and appointments, including nickel Kluson Waffleback tuners, a bone nut and saddle, and the signature rosewood bridge with mother-of-pearl dove inlays. The iconic Dove pickguard, decorated with stamped vines, flowers, and a mother-of-pearl dove, adds a touch of artistry that is instantly recognisable. The Light Aged finish and lightly aged hardware simulate decades of gentle playwear, giving this guitar a unique character and vibe that only Gibson Custom and the Murphy Lab can deliver.

Thermally Aged Sitka Spruce Top

The top wood is thermally aged to replicate the tonal qualities of a vintage instrument, offering enhanced resonance, warmth, and a beautifully balanced sound. This treatment also improves the guitar’s stability and responsiveness over time.

Flamed Maple Back and Sides

The flamed maple not only provides a stunning visual appeal but also contributes to the guitar’s bright, clear tone. Finished in a rich Cherry, it complements the spruce top perfectly, giving the Dove its distinctive voice.

Classic Vintage Appointments

From the mother-of-pearl parallelogram inlays to the iconic rosewood bridge with dove inlays and the decorative pickguard, every detail has been carefully crafted to honour the original 1963 model, enhancing both playability and aesthetics.

Light Aged Finish by the Murphy Lab

The Light Aged finish simulates decades of gentle use, providing the guitar with a unique vintage character and feel. This finish, combined with lightly aged hardware, gives players an authentic vintage experience right out of the case.

Stuff About Acoustic Guitars

Acoustic guitars produce their sound naturally through the vibration of the strings and body, offering a direct and expressive playing experience. They come in a wide range of styles, including steel string and classical designs, each with its own feel and tonal character. Body shape, wood choice, and construction all influence warmth, projection, and balance, making acoustics suitable for everything from gentle fingerstyle to confident strumming. Whether used for songwriting, practice, or performance, acoustic guitars provide a simple, honest connection between the player and the music.

Stuff About Guitars

Guitars cover a wide range of instruments designed to suit different styles, techniques, and sounds, from acoustic and classical models to solid body, semi-hollow, and hollow electric designs. Factors like body shape, scale length, neck profile, string type, and pickups all influence how a guitar feels and responds, making each type suited to different players and musical approaches. Whether used for rhythm, lead, songwriting, or experimentation, guitars are expressive, versatile instruments that form the heart of countless genres and playing styles.

Stuff About Steel String Acoustic Guitars

Steel string acoustic guitars are known for their bright, clear tone and strong projection, making them a popular choice for strumming, fingerpicking, and songwriting. Using steel strings gives them more tension and volume than classical guitars, resulting in a sound that cuts through well whether played solo or alongside other instruments. They come in a range of body shapes and sizes, each influencing balance, resonance, and comfort. From delicate fingerstyle passages to powerful rhythm playing, steel string acoustics are versatile instruments that respond well to dynamics and playing style, both at home and on stage.
