When the Mimiq pedal dropped in 2016, many players were intrigued by the convincing “double-tracked” effect it delivered. TC Electronic have now released a Mini version, maintaining a lot of the features of the original but in a smaller casing!
What does “Double-Tracked” Mean?
In the studio, many guitarists will record the same part twice (or more) to really fatten up their guitar sound and add depth. For example, a riff can sound good in mono, but when the riff is played exactly the same way twice over (and are panned left and right) you get a huge wall of sound.
This is due to the slight variations in pick attack, fretted intonation and overall tone. It sounds like 2 guitarists playing the same thing and is a technique that you definitely would have heard if you’ve ever listened to any kind of guitar music.
The brainiacs over at TC Electronic have managed to design an algorithm that emulates this effect, so you can sound huge with less effort. This pedal really comes into its own if you are a single guitarist in a band, where if playing live you can sound weak and buried. No problem – just use this pedal and you’ll sound bigger and more powerful!
Easy to Adjust:
Use the Effect and Dry controls to balance how much of the “double-tracked” guitar you want in your signal. Set the Effect knob low for a subtle doubling effect, or crank it for a really thick sound.
The Tightness control lets you affect how tight the second track is. If you’re a metal player who plays fast and intricate riffs, then it’s best to set it fairly low so that you aren’t getting a delay-type effect. However, if you play heavily distorted, doom-inspired riffs, then turn it up for maximum muscle.
Pedalboard-friendly:
Mini pedals have been a recent phenomenon, with lots of manufacturers releasing scaled-down versions of their pedals. As many musicians want smaller and more portable pedalboards, the Mimiq Mini is perfect if you want a powerful pedal that is tiny enough to add to your ergonomic pedalboard.
Even if you run a large pedalboard, mini pedals such as this are great for placing into small gaps between other pedals. Take advantage of your pedalboard’s real-estate!
Here’s what TC Electronic say about the Mimiq Mini:
Tiny Tonal Tyrant
Mimiq Mini Doubler brings you the same ground-breaking live guitar doubling as its bigger brother. With our proprietary doubler algorithm condensed and squeezed it into a tiny enclosure, Mimiq Mini delivers actual studio-grade double tracking in an impossibly small pedal. Turn it on and hear your guitar gain an epic grandeur belying Mimiqs small size, as if you were suddenly accompanied by your own personal second gutarist. Condensed down to its true, extraordinary essence, Mimiq Mini gives you more tone for less pedalboard real estate.
