Now we are ghosts

The device is a small metal box, humming faintly, remembering songs it can’t quite play. when activated, it releases long uneven tones that pass between distortion and clarity. Its voice floats on air, hollow and fragile. Exhaling into the void, its heartbeat replaced by an echo.

Now We Are Ghosts started as an attempt to create a synthesizer out of a reverb. Start with the familiar filter, envelope generators, low-frequency oscillators, and voltage-controlled amplifiers. Then replace the voltage-controlled oscillators with the reverb voice. The result is Now We Are Ghosts. It’s a complex exploration of sonic space with lots of unique opportunities for creative mayhem.

From the designer: I have been working on this pedal for more than a year, including some early prototypes that I showed off back in early 2025. It’s been through three name changes and three different graphic designs, but now we’ve finally arrived at something that is really special. The art is by the incredibly talented Conrad Keely, and I couldn’t be happier with the way the whole package turned out. I’ve leveraged the form factor of Forget-Me-Not with lots of knobs and switches to facilitate real-time control, which helps this pedal feel really immediate and fun. My only rule for this design was that every control had to do something cool. I hope you enjoy this.— Matthew Farrow

Stuff About Guitar Pedals

Guitar pedals are compact effects units that shape and enhance a guitar’s sound, sitting between the instrument and the amplifier. They include gain pedals like overdrive and distortion, modulation effects such as chorus and tremolo, time-based effects like delay and reverb, and essential utilities including tuners, compressors and loopers. Understanding basic things such as pedal type, signal order, power requirements and intended use helps players choose pedals that suit their style, setup and playing environment.

The Important stuff

Pedal — Pedals are the tools that let you shape, colour and transform your sound, from subtle tone enhancement to bold, creative effects. Whether you are adding grit, space, movement or control, a pedal becomes part of your playing rather than just an add-on. Exploring different pedals is about discovering what responds to your touch and helps your sound feel more like your own.. Pedals — Pedals are compact effects units placed between a guitar and an amplifier to shape, enhance, or transform your sound. They cover everything from drive and distortion to modulation, delay, reverb, and dynamics, allowing players to build a personalised tone and respond creatively to different musical styles and playing situations.. Reverb — Reverb (short for reverberation) is an audio effect that simulates the natural reflections of sound in a physical space. When you play in a room, hall, or cathedral, the sound waves bounce off the walls, ceiling, and floor, creating a sense of depth and ambience. Reverb pedals and processors recreate this effect electronically, allowing guitarists and producers to shape how “big” or “live” their sound feels. From short, springy echoes that mimic vintage amp tanks to lush, atmospheric washes used in ambient or shoegaze music, reverb adds dimension and realism — turning a dry, flat tone into something immersive and expressive..
